4 Critical Errors to Avoid When Applying Roof Coatings

A roof coating is a fully adhered and fluid applied roofing membrane. It is used to protect the roof from harmful UV rays, increase indoor comfort, reduce roof maintenance and reduce life-cycle costs. In this article, one of the leading roofing and residential siding contractors in Illinois addresses four potential application errors to avoid when applying a roof coating system.

  1. Coating too thinly. A roof coating application that is too thin will not offer the same level of protection and strength needed to perform properly. This is because a portion of the water or solvent in the coating evaporates while the application is drying. It is important to add more wet mils during application to compensate for the mils that will evaporate during construction.
  2. Coating too thickly. A roof coating that is too heavy will form blisters, bubbles or wrinkles because the coating beneath the surface does not have sufficient time to dry. This will lead to water or moisture becoming trapped.
  3. Mixing improperly. It is crucial to mix a residential or commercial roof coating thoroughly to achieve proper consistency and adhesion. In many cases, heavier ingredients in the coating will settle to the bottom of the container, so it is necessary to stir the roof coating.
  4. Applying before rainfall. You want your coating to be completely dry before any rainfall occurs so that surface defects will not occur or the roof coating will not wash off the rooftop. However, some roofers also use coatings that can resist early wash-off associated with drizzle and heavy dew.
